CHAPTER FIFTEEN
It was easy to picture the grin that had probably slid onto Marissaâs face when Ben told her to call Cash to let him know he had the job. A little voice was still niggling that this all might be part of Marissaâs master plan to take over the diner, but maybe it was time to trust a little bit too. Sheâd thanked him today for something so simpleâasking her input on an employee she would have to work with. It was the bare minimum for someone who was running the diner with him. But heâd been treating her like another server who would come and go, despite the responsibilities she shouldered. That was embarrassing.
The next morning and early afternoon were busy at the diner again. Marissa and Ben had barely talked. Little River was starting to fill up with guests coming in for Little River Days. Marissa did come and get Ben a couple times, but only because old friends had stopped by and wanted to say hi. Heâd even caught her checking over her shoulder when sheâd left him with a woman heâd dated his senior year. Ben had smiled and waved her off, and her eyes had flashed. Jealousy? The woman was married with three kids, but Ben smirked anyway.
He ended up at the diner for an extra hour, and that night he ordered dinner on the diner app that Addy and Marissa had talked him into last summer to order food to go. One of the many things he hadnât given Marissa credit for that had really worked out. He felt a little stupid going into the diner after heâd gotten off, especially two nights in a row, but Jerry was making his special, kalua pork, and Ben had to drop off the anniversary party invitations anyway. Addy had texted him earlier asking if he could. Marissa had thought she could get away that evening, but things were too busy for her to leave Delaynee. They needed to get Cash trained as soon as possible.
His phone buzzed, and he expected a message from Breann. Their chats had been slow the last couple days, so maybe she was in a writing zone. She had mentioned that sometimes she could go off the grid for days if she was in a flow.
It was actually Marissa. Did you seriously use the app you despise to order dinner? This was followed by multiple laughing emojis.
Hereâs a confession, he wrote back, warming at the idea of texting Marissa in this friendly way. Like they were actual friends and not rival colleagues. I may have judged many of your good ideas unfairly.
Next time, text me. Youâre the owner, for heavenâs sake. That should come with perks.
Got it. Iâll bring the invitations over when I come to pick it up. They turned out good.
Her next text came several minutes later and with a skeptical-looking emoji. Where is Ben and how much is the ransom? Iâll see if Addy wants to pay it.
He laughed.
